Hi, I'm Mali!
I am a family historian, facilitator, and certified Guided Autobiography instructor. I'm also a new mother, former high school teacher, and resident of Vancouver Island, Canada. I have a B.A., B.Ed (secondary education), and a master's in Adult Learning and Education.
My experience creating custom books began in the early 2000s when I helped my grandmother, Claudia Ada Bain, turn her old photos & typewritten stories into a beautiful book. NextGen Story is my way of helping you create a book that pays respect to your loved one(s).
This work for me is about living my values: purpose, connection, and empathy. If you're thinking of a project, just send me a note and we can find a time to talk about the project you have in mind.
From the outset, it was clear to me that Mali's knowledge, empathy, tenacity and guidance would ensure the project's success. What I most appreciated, aside from her extraordinary flexibility, was Mali's sensitivity to some of the emotions that came to the fore when looking at and talking about photos of a (deceased) loved one.
Her suggestions on edits, additions, and narrative have helped to focus and re-focus the scope. Mali's passion for genealogical research provided valuable input into some missing family information. More than just a trip down memory lane, this project has been a treasure hunt, taking me in many directions, (rabbit hole!) and Mali's knowledge, skill, and intuitive strategy have guided me along the way to make stronger connections with my family's past..

I love to work alongside individuals and/or families to support quality professional book publication: including writing, photo curation, content curation, editing, design, ISBN registration, and printing. Here are a few of the projects I've worked on:
"Lilies of My Field", by Claudia A. Bain - a memoir of Claudia's life as a teacher, mother, and adventurer.
"Love, Mom" - a collection of Claudia's daily emails & paintings
"Our Homes on Indigenous Lands: Stories of My Ancestors". Currently in press (Hancock Press)
"The Great, Great, Great Harry Foote" - a children's book about an ancestor.
"Bunty" - a coffee-table book about a brother, son, and uncle who died at twenty in World War II
